Zenhancer’s competitive position regarding outsourcing editorial services is based on a dual onshore–offshore model that focuses on both style and language editing
Zenhancer has a broad network of onshore and offshore copy editing staff working on a diverse range of subject matter. Central to our copy editing service is the team based at the Zenhancer facility in US, India, which manages Tier 2 books. Tier 2 books require a full review of the text for grammatical and language errors. However, there is less substantive editing, and the focus is on stylistic issues. Tier 1 books are copy edited by our onshore editors based in different parts of the UK, Ireland and the USA and are managed from our Dublin office. Tier 1 books require more substantive language editing, including sentence reconstruction, grammar usage, and diction.
Profile and Training of Copy Editors
Most of Zenhancer’s copy editors are graduates or postgraduates in the sciences such as biology, physics and chemistry suitable for editing STM content. Zenhancer also has staff with degrees in business, economics, and social sciences such as history, literature, and law suitable for social sciences and humanities content. In addition to a strong educational background, these editors have excellent grammatical and editing skills.
Deanta is acutely aware of the quality issues many publishers find when outsourcing editorial services. In order to ensure that Deanta has the best editors in the industry, we have an extremely stringent process of tests and interviews for recruitment, with a success rate of less than 5% for experienced editorial applicants. Only editors with the best language skills are hired which ensures the highest quality of editing. Also, points for improvement are discussed with editors in weekly meetings. Similarly, the onshore editors are given regular feedback on their editing. Any feedback from the client is taken very seriously and appropriate measures are implemented to insure that all editorial work is of the highest quality.
Here are the profiles of some of the senior members in our copy editing department:
Our copy editing manager has 11 years of experience in the publishing industry, with extensive experience in content development, editing books, reviewing works of other editors, and managing the department. She has a master’s degree in chemistry and has worked with well-known international publishers.
Zenhancer also has an editor with over 6 years of experience in the areas of manuscript screening, content development and copy editing STM and humanities books and journals. This editor has a postgraduate degree in biotechnology.
One of our senior editors has over seven years of experience in editing varied subjects including humanities, economics and politics. He has a bachelor’s degree in law and a master’s degree in international relations and affairs.
All editorial projects at Zenhancer are reviewed at a number of different stages:
Manuscript Review : As part of the general manuscript review, the senior copy editor reviews the content of each manuscript and assesses the requirements in terms of subject matter and the general condition of the input language. The manuscript is then assigned to an appropriate editor along with the manuscript review report.
Style Editing (Tier 2) : As part of the general manuscript review, the senior copy editor reviews the content of each manuscript and assesses the requirements in terms of subject matter and the general condition of the input language. The manuscript is then assigned to an appropriate editor along with the manuscript review report.
Language Editing (Tier 1) : The language editing team carries out an intense paragraph-by-paragraph edit of a complete manuscript, looking for errors and consistency in relation to article usage, subject-verb agreement, tense, hyphenation and the application and usage of specific terms. The team is aided by an in-house copy editing tool that highlights discrepancies in UK and US spelling, discrepancies in hyphenations, possible misspellings and a list of abbreviations not expanded in the text. If a sentence is unclear or if the copy editor is unsure of a change, a query to the author and publisher is inserted.
Copy Editing Review : After style editing and language editing, articles and chapters that need advanced editing are reviewed by the senior copy editor and then released to the main production team.
Editorial Proofreading : A line-by-line editorial proofreading of the first proof is included in the workflow for projects where Deanta has a prior agreement with the client. Deanta is especially meticulous with the proofreading process to insure the highest quality.
